An off-track door is almost always a symptom, not the disease. Fixing the track without fixing the cause just means we see you again in a month. Here's what actually causes it:
The usual suspects
- Something hit it. A bumper, a trailer hitch, a basketball hoop. Most common cause by a mile.
- A cable snapped or came loose. One side drops, the door racks sideways and walks out of the track.
- Broken or worn rollers. Rollers seize, flat-spot, or the stems bend, and the door climbs out.
- Loose or bent track. Brackets back out over the years, the track drifts, the door finds the gap.
- A broken spring. The door gets very heavy very fast and comes down hard and crooked.

- Secure the door so it can't drop while we work
- Get it back in the track and re-seat the rollers
- Check tracks for bends and straighten or replace what's damaged
- Inspect cables, drums and springs — because one of them probably started this
- Re-balance the door and test the opener's force and reverse
- Tell you what caused it, in plain English
